What Is a Duvet Cover?
A duvet has two parts: an insert and a cover. The insert is a comforter filled with an insulating material for fluff and warmth, typically down or a hypoallergenic alternative. Unlike other comforters, however, a duvet insert has a plain white or ecru exterior fabric without a pattern.Enter the duvet cover, which mimics a giant pillowcase for the duvet, enclosing it in color, pattern, and a protective layer. It’s sewn around the edges but has an opening at the bottom — fastened with buttons, ties, or snaps — for inserting the comforter.
Duvet covers and inserts offer lots of flexibility. Just like duvet inserts vary in terms of warmth, duvet covers come in several styles, hues, textures, and materials. A duvet cover helps turn your bed into a decorative focal point that you can change as often as you like.

Can You Wash Duvet Inserts?
Absolutely, although you’ll need to check the materials and the manufacturer’s washing instructions. Because of a duvet insert’s bulk, you might have to use a commercial or large-capacity washer. You can also have it dry-cleaned.Designers recommend washing a duvet insert about every two to three months, or six months if you use a duvet cover. Spot-clean the insert first with a clean cloth and a mild detergent, then use a gentle cycle with cold water and a mild, bleach-free detergent. No fabric softener. If you have a down duvet insert, use a detergent specifically made for washing down, which won’t strip its natural oils.
Tumble dry the insert on low heat. Add dryer balls or tennis balls to break up the filling and dry it evenly.
