  • Because of Christmas and Hanukkah, a lot of winter decor revolves around these holidays, but winter home decor can cover an array of themes and ideas. Many people turn to seasonal colors, such as reds and greens mimicking holly, poinsettia blooms, and evergreen branches or shades of white like snow or birch trees, while others indulge in seasonal fabrics and natural textures. Think of flannel sheets, plaid throw pillows, and faux fur or velvet throws.

    For some, transforming a home into a winter sanctuary means breaking out frosty mugs and snowflake-themed dinner plates. You might swap in a heavier comforter or one featuring deeper hues, such as jewel tones of red and purple, and hanging wall art of wintery landscapes.

    Winter’s longer nights and shorter days inspire others to turn up the sparkle with metal-plated chargers, candle holders, and other accessories that catch the glint from rustic lanterns or LED fairy lights. While an indoor fireplace or fireplace TV stand adds warmth and glow, so do accent mirrors with metallic trim, crimson shams with two-tone gold embroidery, or toss pillows with a geometric pattern in a silvery sheen.

  • While “winter decor” might seem synonymous with “Christmas decor” in some households, there are some seasonally evergreen choices you can make that won’t break your budget — and some tiny changes that help you transition easily after the holiday.

    Wall art or throw pillows with phrases such as “Let It Snow” can do double duty both before and after Christmas, as can metallic accents on photo frames, candle holders, and table settings. For linens and other patterns, stick with red and white “candy cane” looks before the holiday and phase them out afterward to solid white, a farmhouse red-and-black plaid, or a more modern winter palette with frosty pink, blue, or silver.

    Artificial plants are another way to help transition your winter decor. While pine boughs and pinecones can be appropriate all season long, you can opt for a more general winter appearance by highlighting winter blooms such as crocuses and snowdrops.
